Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called Human Food?

Human Food contains no added sugar, no artificial flavours, preservatives or sweeteners; only organic wholefoods and wholefood extracts.

Human Food contains no artificial flavours or sweeteners, no added sugar, and no synthetic nutrients. It contains only organic whole-foods and whole-food extracts which have always been part of the human diet. Also, Human Food has been made specifically to support a plant-based diet, making it easy to live in a healthy, sustainable and humane way.

What does Human Food taste like?

Human Food is a combination of 20 organic wholefoods and wholefood extracts, designed for maximum nutritional density, and developed specifically to support a plant-based diet. The taste comes naturally from the combination of these ingredients, with no added flavour-ings or sweetners. What is the difference between the Bars?

Each of the bars contains a distinctive functional ingredient, which allows you to pick and choose what is most appropriate to your current health and nutritional needs; Red (goji berry) for detox, Yellow (turmeric) for lowering inflammation / to speed muscle recovery in training, Green (spirulina) for allergies, Orange (orange oil, 100% RI of vitamin C) for increased long-term health and strengthened immune functions, White (Walnuts, almonds, cashews) for reduced blood pressure, improved insulin response etc. (Read more about functionals here).

These powerful, functional ingredients bring with them their own subtle flavours: The Red bar is sweeter and slightly fruitier than the others, thanks to the goji berries. The Yellow bar has a just-noticeable warmth from turmeric, and the cacao flavour is more prominent the Yellow than in the other bars. The Green bar is more savory, the spirulina bringing a discreet but distinct flavour which has been described as “smooth, rich and nutritious.” The Orange bar has a delicious and natural chocolate orange flavour, while the White bar is earthy and with large nut pieces, noticeably more crunchy than the other bars.

Why is Human Food organic?

Human Food is designed and developed for a healthier, more compassionate, more reasonable, more sustainable future; the kind of future, that for ourselves and for the good of the planet we need to be moving towards. Our commitment to organic supports this goal in a number of ways:

For health;  organic produce does not contain harmful agricultural chemicals, including pesti-cides, herbicides or toxic metals such as cadmium. Organic produce has also been shown to contain higher levels of powerful antioxidants which help to combat and even reverse age-re-lated cognitive decline, including conditions such as Alzheimer's. Organic certification also precludes the use of artificial flavours, sweeteners, preservatives and fortification with synthetic nutrients. Read more here.

For wildlife; chemical-based farming uses herbicides and pesticides which destroy ecosystems and fertilisers that massively reduce plant diversity. On average, organic farms are home to 30% greater biodiversity, and 300-400% greater abundance of wildlife than those using non-organic methods.

For climate; If all UK Farming was converted to organic, at least 1.3 million tonnes of carbon would be taken up by the soil each year - equivalent to taking 1 million cars off the road.

Are there maximum and minimum Monthly Subscription orders?

We recommend 20 bars per month - giving you approximately 1 bar a day, 5 days a week. But subscriptions can be set for as few as 10 bars per month, or as many as 100, and dispatch dates can be easily edited as any time, so whether you use HF bars just a couple of times a week, or if your whole family has one every day, you can tailor your order so that you never run out. Monthly orders can be edited individually - upto a year in advance, and up until payment is taken, 48hrs before your dispatch date.

Pre-paid, 6 month or 12 month subscriptions are all based on 20 bars a month, however, once you’ve set up this type of subscription you can still edit bar number every month. Changing the number of bars you receive will simply mean that you will run out earlier or that your subscription lasts longer. For example, a pre-paid 6 month subscription will give you 8 monthly orders of 15 bars, 12 monthly orders of 10 bars, or 3 months at 40 bars.

Our subscription service is totally flexible and super-easy to start, stop and edit, and has other advantages such as Free HF T-shirt, and introductory guide, Free monthly Newsletter, Free UK and discounted overseas delivery on orders of 20 or more. If however subscription doesn’t work for you, it is also possible to place one-off orders for anywhere between 3 and 300 bars.

Is Human Food available in health-food shops or supermarkets?

No. Human Food is currently available exclusively through the HF website.

Human Food is not a snack or a traditional breakfast or muesli bar, Human Food uses the absolute highest-quality organic, wholefood ingredients, there are no flavourings or flavour enhancers, no added sugar, no synthetic nutrients, no soy and no GMOs. Human Food is not bulked up with empty calories but is designed for absolute maximum nutritional density, with added functional ingredients which have been shown to have a dramatic positive impact on long-term health and well-being [ Functional ingredients ]. Human Food uses highly specialised recycled/ recyclable/ biodegradable/ compostable zero-plastic packaging. We work hard to keep the price of a bar below the cost of ingredients in it if you were to buy them from a traditional retailer, part of the way we manage this is by selling direct to customers.

Why is the price £3.30 a Bar?

Human Food development began with a set of principles; Human Food would always be 100% organic and 100% wholefood, contain no synthetic nutrients, no added sugar, no artificial sweeteners preservatives or other additives, and would take care of a lot of nutritional difficulties which can be associated with plant-based diets. Human Food would require no preparation and the packaging would be 100% plastic-free and 100% compostable. Once our recipes and packaging were as good as we could make them we worked out a fair price per bar, which remains less than the high-street cost of the ingredients in it.

What is a Daily Nutrition Bar?

Human Food has been designed to provide a solid nutritional base to make it as easy as possible to maintain a nutritionally complete, plant-based diet, while avoiding additives and synthetic nutrients. Human Food provides significant quantities of a wide range of nutrients which it can be difficult to obtain from plant-based diets, including 100% RI of vitamin B12, and 50% RI of Iron, Calcium, Vitamin D, Magnesium, Omega 3, vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6. Human Food provides all these nutrients in an organic, wholefood form, which is both more bioavailable and more effective than synthetic alternatives which, although they carry the same label, are rarely, if ever, structurally and chemically identical to the substances they claim to replicate, as they are found occurring naturally within food. Human Food also contains a range of functional ingredients which have proven benefits for long-term health and well-being.

We believe that Human Food is the world’s most nutritionally-dense organic food product. Human Food bars can be eaten daily as an alternative to taking a multi-vitamin supplement, and while it is designed specifically for those following a plant-based diet, it’s good for anybody.

Are the seeds in Human Food Bars ground or split?

No. The seeds in Human Food bars are included whole (though some breakage can occur during mixing and bar formation). This minimises oxidisation, which in time can lead to degradation in taste and nutrition. The inclusion of whole seeds also gives a more varied texture and recent versions of the bars have been made with increased seed content and reduced mixing time after trials with the Human Food Development Team revealed that most people found that this texture and the more differentiated flavour profile which results, gives a more enjoyable and more interesting eating experience.

How many Bars? How often? And when?

In order to gain the full benefit of the nutritional and functional profile which Human Food has to offer, we recommend 1 bar a day at least 5 days a week, although there’s no reason why you shouldn’t eat more if you want to. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, or otherwise have a low intake of animal products and you are using Human Food to meet your daily requirement of vitamin B12 it is best to eat a bar every day (one HF bar contains 100% RI of vitamin B12). Used regularly Human Food will provide a solid nutritional basis from which it is easy to maintain a wholesome, super-healthy, nutritionally complete diet. HF also offers super-convenient access to the long-term benefits of the unique range of functional ingredients.

Feedback from our subscribers suggests that most people eat Human Food in the morning, often for breakfast, usually with a glass of water and often with a piece of fruit. Many people find HF bars make a good breakfast or lunch, which easily keeps them full until their next meal.

Many subscribers say they find it useful to take a bar to work, as local shops and cafes offer very little that isn't full of sugar and preservatives. HF is also used by subscribers on walking trips, triathlons, international cycle rides, trips into town, and every type of expedition.

Though there is no reason why HF cannot be eaten at any time of the day (or night), ginseng and maca are mild stimulants, which are proven to increase mental focus and physical endurance, perfect for a challenging work assignment or a big training session. However, If you’re very sensitive to these ingredients, it may be best to avoid HF just before you intend to go to sleep.
